Spring AAC Sales!

In April and May, many augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) applications go on sale. If you are interested in obtaining an AAC application for your child, the Boston Ability Center speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are here to help!

Families currently have 3 options for obtaining AAC applications:

  1. Apply for device funding through insurance

  2. Obtain a device through school

  3. Independently obtain a device through private pay

There are benefits and drawbacks to each option:

Benefits

Drawbacks

Device Funded Through Insurance

  • Possible decreased out of pocket cost for the family

  • Increased vendor support for training

  • Warranty and tech support available through vendor

  • Formalized process requiring evaluation, trial, and wait time to receive a dedicated device. Insurance may deny initial requests and require an appeal.

Device Funded Through School District

  • No cost to the family

  • School team involved in AAC assessment and implementation

  • Some schools may not allow device to be taken home

  • Some schools may use a ‘device first’ model, recommending devices that the school already has a license to rather than the best individual fit

Device Obtained Through Private Pay

  • Immediate access to AAC app on mainstream hardware (iPad, Android tablet)

  • Family involvement in determining ‘best fit’ AAC application

  • Family is responsible for full cost of the device and subsequent repairs

  • Trainings are self-guided

If you decide that private pay is the best option for you and your family, there are some important sale dates coming up!
