WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM AQUATIC THERAPY?

Aquatic therapy is a modality that can aid in achieving optimal quality of life in children of all ages with conditions including, but not limited to:

  • Cerebral Palsy

  • Spina Bifida

  • Down Syndrome

  • Muscular Dystrophy

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder

  • Sensory Processing Disorder

  • Orthopedic or neurological conditions

  • Developmental delays

BENEFITS OF AQUATIC THERAPY
  • The increased buoyancy or floating makes it easier to move the extremities while reducing weightbearing through the legs, which is great for those with decreased balance or strength

  • Swimming is a full body exercise which makes it great for building endurance

  • Water can provide great sensory input for the body whether you only dip your feet in or dunk your head!

  • It encourages work on respiration and breath control which can impact progress with physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy

  • It's FUN!

AQUATIC THERAPY VS. ADAPTIVE SWIM
  • Aquatic therapy is a form of habilitation or rehabilitation that involves clinical judgement of a licensed provider to determine interventions and an appropriate plan of care

  • Adaptive swim involves teaching those with disability HOW to swim

  • Sometimes, these two practices can overlap! It depends on your child’s goals and needs!
