What is Aquatic Physical Therapy?
Aquatic PT shares the foundation of traditional, land-based physical therapy, however, uses the benefits of warm water. Boston Ability Center physical and occupational therapists develop specific goals for each child that are targeted during each appointment to promote your child’s independence. Treatment sessions happen in the 88-degree, 4-lane teaching pool at the Boston Sports Institute.
The aquatic medium relies on the unique properties of water, including buoyancy, viscosity, surface tension, and hydrostatic pressure.
Buoyancy helps to promote relaxation as kids can float and feel lighter.
Viscosity of water improves sensory processing by providing resistance and increased input.
Surface tension in the water improves sensory processing by providing resistance and an increased state of alertness.
Hydrostatic pressure of the water provides a calming effect.

What can be treated in the aquatic environment?
Poor head and/or trunk control
Impaired balance
Impaired coordination
Decreased range of motion
Weakness
Limited endurance
Who could benefit from Aquatic PT?
Children of all ages and ability levels can participate in aquatic therapy! Therapists can target strength, endurance, gait training, motor planning, and range of motion through play in the pool.
