Thinking about how to talk to your kid about being inclusive of the differences that make us who we are? Reading books can be a great way to spark conversations, provide age-appropriate language, and model perspective taking with peers.
These picks come straight from BAC occupational therapist Carla, who selected some of her favorite reads to help kids see the beauty in differences.
Here are 5 books we love at the BAC:
A Day With No Words by Tiffany Hammond: This beautiful story invites readers to see the world through the eyes of an Autistic child and his mom, highlighting that communication and connection come in many forms. It celebrates neurodiversity and reminds us that words aren’t the only way to be understood.

The Day You Begin by Jaqueline Woodson: This heartfelt story celebrates the bravery it takes to share who you are, even when you feel different or alone. It reminds readers that our unique stories are actually what connect us, and that inclusion begins when we reach out and listen to one another.

We're All Wonders by R. J. Palacio: Told through the eyes of Auggie, a boy who looks different from his peers, this story encourages readers to look beyond appearances and choose kindness. It’s a powerful reminder that everyone deserves to feel seen, accepted, and included just as they are.

Included: A book for ALL children about inclusion, diversity, disability, equality and empathy by Jayneen Sander: This empowering book introduces six children with diverse abilities, and celebrates what makes each of them unique. It helps readers understand that everyone wants to feel they belong. It shows simple, meaningful ways to include all kids in play and in everyday life.

All Are Welcome Here by Alexandra Penfold (This is part of a series of wonderful books!): “In our classroom safe and sound, Fears are lost and hope is found.” Follow a group of children through a day in their school, where everyone is welcomed with open arms. This story offers hope for a vibrant future, reminding readers the importance of bringing children from all different backgrounds & traditions together to learn, play, grow, and thrive!
